Hi Liz!
I’m a big fan and could use your advice. I’ve been interviewing for Marketing Manager jobs, but I wonder if I’m focusing on the wrong positions because I haven’t made it to the second interview stage yet.
I have a lot of Marketing experience but I haven’t been a manager before.
So when the interviewer asks me questions about management, I can share my opinions but I don’t have stories to back them up.
I only started applying for Marketing Manager jobs because my salary requirements are in line with Marketing Manager jobs.
I see dozens of Marketing Manager jobs posted in my area and I’ve had some management responsibilities in the past.
At my last interview…
Hi Terry,
It’s great that you are evaluating your job search direction rather than continuing to be frustrated by interviews that don’t lead
to job offers.
If you’ve had a string of first interviews for Marketing Manager jobs that didn’t lead to second interviews, you have several alternatives to consider.
One alternative is to put the focus on management jobs aside for the moment and go after senior level individual contributor roles that pay in the same range as Marketing Manager jobs.
To do that, you’ll need to zero in on the specific areas of Marketing where you’ll have the greatest impact.
That might be…
Hi Liz and Team,
I’ve been in my job for 18 months. My first performance review (at the one-year mark) was very good, but now my manager feels my performance is slipping.
She met with me two weeks ago to tell me I need to improve my work. Here’s the list of items I must improve:
1. I need to get better at time management. When I’m behind schedule, I need to let my manager know.
2. I must be prepared for weekly staff meetings. (I came to a meeting without much preparation and I couldn’t answer questions about the status of my projects.)
3. I have to reply to emails in a timely manner.
I need ideas and advice! How do I accomplish these goals? I am worried that….
Hi Corinne,
Thanks for your question!
It’s no fun to hear that your performance isn’t in line with your manager’s expectations, but our recommendations will help you get more control over your time and your responsibilities.
The first step is to Get Altitude on your role to understand your hourly, daily, weekly and monthly responsibilities.
Here’s a list of questions to get you started.
As you answer these questions, think about the priority of each item on the list.
Not every situation you deal with at work has the same importance.
What are the most critical activities in your job, the ones that take priority over everything else?
What are the activities that your manager and your “clients” (coworkers and others who rely on
you) care about the most?...
Hi Liz and teammates,
I’m an HR manager with recruiting responsibilities. I like my job except for one thing.
I have a very hard time getting hiring managers to give me feedback after interviews.
We have lost candidates because it took us too long to get back to them after their
interviews.
When I tell hiring managers about that, they….
Hi Morgan,
Thanks for your question!
So sorry to hear you’re dealing with that issue.
Our recommendations will help you get faster responses from hiring managers so you don’t
lose any more candidates from your pipeline.
Hiring managers may feel overwhelmed, or they may lose track of the number of days that have elapsed since they met each candidate.
We know that it gets old following up with hiring managers to get them to respond. It’s not a good use of your time or theirs.
We’ve found that a three-part process works very well to get better and faster post- interview feedback from hiring managers and other interviewers.
The process is laid out below…
